Kill Me Heal Me Korean Drama Review

Monday 14 September 2015

While recuperating from my ankle injury recently, I spent my time watching korean dramas all day long like I've always enjoyed doing so. Without realising it, I find myself with a long list of dramas waiting to be shared with my readers here. By far, I've only shared one on my blog about a couple of months ago - Who Are You, School 2015. Which means there's many more to go....

Therefore here I am hitting the keyboard to start blogging about the most recent drama I've completed watching; an amazing one that is.

Call me slow to only watch Kill Me Heal Me now during the last quarter of 2015, when it was aired in the first quarter of the year. But I am really glad that I finally decided to watch this drama after hearing about it so many times! To be honest, I showed interest because of Ji Sung, and guess what, if you are a fan of Ji Sung you must must MUST watch KILL ME HEAL ME!

Plot

This drama belonging to various genres which focuses mainly on romance and comedy, revolves around a third generation billionaire (chaebol) from Seungjin Group, who is known as Cha Do Hyun (Ji Sung). However, Cha Do Hyun is someone who has Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D) due to a traumatic experience during his childhood and ends up having his personalities split into seven different identities. Oh Ri Jin (Hwang Jung Eum), who is a first year psychiatric resident, ends up meeting Cha Do Hyun and becomes his secret physician to treat him. Oh Ri Jin's twin brother Oh Ri On (Park Seo Joon) is a mystery novelist who is secretly investigating on Cha Do Hyun and his family background, where the drama unfolds its further mysteries and surprising facts.

Cast

Ji Sung

In Kill Me Heal Me, Ji Sung plays the role of the main character, Cha Do Hyun

In this drama, he takes up the challenge of acting as a character with different personalities due to D.I.D. With that said, I have to admit that his acting was very impressive and at the same time interesting. He definitely portrayed the different sides of Cha Do Hyun very well. Hence, through this drama we actually got to see the different sides of Ji Sung... Which fan of his wouldn't love it? Can't help but imagine how difficult it must have been to act as 7 different "people" and yet at the same time, I trust that he enjoyed taking up the role himself.

Since I personally enjoy watching dramas where the actors have to act as two or more different people with different personalities, no doubt Kill Me Heal Me was another drama that I fell in love with. Isn't it fun to see those talented actors portray themselves into different characters in one drama?

Ji Sung is an actor I knew from my childhood days when I also enjoyed watching Korean Dramas. I first knew him from "Delicious Proposal", a drama which he played a minor role in. I believe his popularity rose because of "All In". Athough I can't remember if I've watched any of his other dramas ever since then, I'm happy to know that an actor I took interest in during my childhood days is still active and doing well in his acting career to date.

We also know him for his beautiful marriage with the ever-so-gorgeous Lee Bo Young.

If you've watched Kill Me Heal Me, it's hard not to notice this:

Ji Sung developed manner hands while pursuing Lee Bo Young. (Read article here) The fact that Ji Sung is so sweet and such a gentleman can never be denied.

Hwang Jung Eum

Hwang Jung Eum takes on the role of the psychiatrist as well as Cha Do Hyun's secret physician, Oh Ri Jin.

I am sure that this is the first time I am watching her dramas. Truthfully, I feel that her acting makes her character seem very lively, and of course really expressive. Maybe that's the nature of her character in the drama itself, however her acting definitely managed to bring some cheery feeling to the viewers of the show. I feel that her as a co-star of Ji Sung was a good choice, especially since good chemistry was felt between the two, as well as their great teamwork on the funny scenes in Kill Me Heal Me.

Park Seo Joon

Park Seo Joon plays the role of Oh Ri Jin's twin brother in Kill Me Heal Me, Oh Ri On. He is a mystery novelist in the drama who secretly investigates on Cha Do Hyun's family background.

By far I've only seen him in the famous SBS variety show, Running Man. I admit that I loved his acting in Kill Me Heal Me, especially during the comedic scenes. He was able to make his character connect to the others in the drama, which was what I really enjoyed. Though he hasn't acted for that long yet, I'm definitely excited to see more of his dramas in the future.

Kim Yoo Ri

I trust that most of us knew her better through the drama Master's Sun. Compared to that, Kim Yoo Ri's role in Kill Me Heal Me was much less significant in my opinion. Of course, she doesn't appear as much as in Master's Sun, and definitely her relations with the other characters doesn't seem too "connected". Somehow it made me feel as though her character was redundant in this drama, sigh.

But... She is the first actress whom I think looks extremely good in short hair...?!

Kim Seul Gi

Although Kim Seul Gi appeared only as a cameo in this drama, my love for this talented supporting actress never dies! Her characters seem to always add more spices to the dish. I got to know more about her through Oh My Ghostess (a must watch!!), in which she took on a bigger role as the virgin ghost. It was then I started to recognise her in the previous dramas she was in. I honestly look forward to a drama which she would be the main character instead!

Characters of Kill Me Heal Me

The 7 Personalities of Cha Do Hyun

1. Cha Do Hyun

This personality is the character himself. Cha Do Hyun is more gentleman looking with a softer gaze. He is a warm and caring person, who is constantly worrying for others especially Oh Ri Jin. As he is unable to remember what his other personalities does, Cha Do Hyun is always apologetic to others for the fear that they may have been unintentionally harmed. However, he is responsible and cleans up all the mess his personalities may have caused.

I personally feel that Ji Sung suited this image best, since he originally had the gentleman aura in him. And it's just... Very Ji Sung.

2. Shin Se Gi

Despite the fierce and strong aura, Shin Se Gi is possibly the most wounded personality out of the 7. His style is more of the bad-boy-look, and definitely a piercing gaze unlike Cha Do Hyun's. Shin Se Gi's dressing is more fashionable and stylish compared to Cha Do Hyun who loves to wear suits and ties. Shin Se Gi is a tougher guy who is "dangerous" as he has a rather bad temper who throws fist at people who upsets him. On the other hand though, his warmer side can be felt through his love and care for Oh Ri Jin.

I am still amazed at how Ji Sung looks extremely different with such a style and make up. Throughout this personality's regular appearance, I couldn't help but wonder whether it's really Ji Sung. I've to say that the stylist and make-up artist definitely did a great job, which of course, Ji Sung's acting deserved the biggest credit.

3. Perry Park

Perry Park is a personality that is the oldest among the 7, who enjoys drinking and fishing. At the same time, he is talented in making bombs (and very obsessed in them too...) Perry Park is one of the humorous personalities, with his center-parting hairstyle and fisherman-like dressing.

What I love most about Perry Park is his funny accent. It definitely showed a very interesting side of Ji Sung!

4. Ahn Yo Sub

Known as the suicidal personality, Ahn Yo Sub is a 17-year old boy who constantly thinks of ending 'his life' with the rest of the other personalities. Compared to the other personalities, this one is less expressive in terms of talking and feelings. Ahn Yo Sub is more of a seemingly 'ignorant' personality to an extent. Though that much is said, his appearance is less.

5. Ahn Yo Na

Ahn Yo Na is another personality that is a twin sister of Ahn Yo Sub. A very funny personality which added loads of humor to the drama, bringing laughter to the viewers. Through this personality, we get to see a girly side of Ji Sung who dolls up in bright coloured lipstick, hair accessories and skirt. Of course, not to forget his high-pitched voice that goes "Oppa ~ Oppa ~" that topped off his girly actions.

This personality is my personal favourite among the seven, as it was really funny. Truthfully, I felt that this was also the one that made his impressive acting ability more obvious to the fans and viewers of Kill Me Heal Me.

Kill Me Heal Me was interesting enough that my dad watched it with me all the way almost from the first ep (which he hardly does).
I honestly think that it was Ji Sung that aroused my dad's interest in the drama itself. Very rarely do my dad compliment an actor (and a korean one even). To my surprise, my dad complimented Ji Sung's acting which impressed him, and even said that he really seemed like a girl. It felt really good to hear him say something so positive since he's always criticising actors' appearance for nothing... Which is sad - even sadder if it's your favourite actor.

I shall refrain myself from talking about the last two personalities, in case I spoil the drama for anyone of you who hasn't watched Kill Me Heal Me yet. To find out the cause of these personalities and the remaining two, do watch Kill Me Heal Me :-)

The Twin Siblings

Oh Ri Jin

Oh Ri Jin is pretty much a positive and cheerful girl in this drama, who adds some liveliness to the drama that is always changing from sadness to mysteries to comedy. She is someone filled with warmth like Cha Do Hyun, and is very kind-hearted. (Though, she is very playful and rough towards her twin brother Oh Ri On)

As much as she is a very bright person, this character has her own hidden mysteries as well.

Oh Ri On

Oh Ri On is like a brother that every girl dreams to have. Despite enjoying teasing his little twin sister, Oh Ri On is also a caring and loving brother whom Oh Ri Jin comfortably confides in during her difficult times. He is someone Oh Ri Jin trusts and receives loads of warmth from.

Because of some reasons which is not to be told here, Oh Ri Jin secretly investigates Cha Do Hyun's background.

Watch the drama to find out more!

What I really loved about Kill Me Heal Me

The Oh Family

The twin siblings come from a family that is constantly filled with love, warmth and laughter. The heartwarming scenes of the Oh family in Kill Me Heal Me really makes one envious!

For the first time, I felt green with envy from a happy family that was portrayed in the drama itself. The warmth that can be felt from the family is pretty similar to Reply 1994's (In Reply 1994, instead of a real family, a group of students live together in a boarding house with 2 parents)

The Twins' Relationship

The relationship between the twin siblings are really heartwarming to watch as an audience. Argh, makes me envious. What I really love about the two is the chemistry that was felt between them, as well as the funny and playful scenes shown in the drama. The fact that the two always uses some english in their dialogues also added some humor.

The funny relations between Ahn Yo Na & Oh Ri On

It was in my opinion the most hilarious connection in Kill Me Heal Me - the one between Ahn Yo Na & Oh Ri On. We all can't help but recall the moment when Yo Na calls Ri On "Oppa ~" desperately each time.

Most favourite scenes of Kill Me Heal Me

More like a scene which filled my heart with loads of warmth, I can't forget the hopefulness that can be given to people in serious distress and with suicidal thoughts after watching this scene.
During Yo Sub's personality appearance, Yo Sub who wanted to commit suicide left a dying message. He drew on graffiti of the different personalities with spray paint and left two words in red on the floor "KILL ME!!". The two words were then amended to "HEAL ME" by Oh Ri Jin.

I personally feel that this was one of the best scenes of the drama. Very meaningful in general, and it was one rare scene of a drama that allowed me to feel the warm feelings that were being conveyed.

One of the unforgettable comedic scenes of Kill Me Heal Me was the first appearance of Ahn Yo Na's personality.
Right when Cha Do Hyun disappeared and 'changed' into Ahn Yo Na, an idol group in the drama known as Rocking, was nearby. In this drama, this idol group was known as one with the most male fans. Right at the moment, Ahn Yo Na enters enthusiastically while screaming "Oppa! Oppa~!". 'She' who desperately rushes onto the stage, became a very puzzling moment for the idols who were shocked to see such an enthusiastic 'male' fan.

I definitely enjoyed all of the funny scenes between Ahn Yo Na and Oh Ri On, from the time when they were at a cafe to the time when they were at Oh Ri On's house.
We all remember the traumatizing yet funny moment when Ahn Yo Na recognised Oh Ri On as the handsome oppa in Oh Ri Jin's family photo at the cafe... Where Ri On desperately calls Ri Jin for help.. and then the chase which begun, leading to the desperate kiss from Ahn Yo Na...

We all remember the funny rap battle between Shin Se Gi and Oh Ri Jin at the company.
This short and nonsensical dialogue between the two really cracked me up so much!

The scene of the ridiculously unfair spin wheel board created by Shin Se Gi was something to remember.
Shin Se Gi has been continuously pestering Oh Ri Jin to choose between Cha Do Hyun and himself. Regardless of a 0.1% taken up by Cha Do Hyun on the spinning wheel board, Oh Ri Jin's spin still resulted to Cha Do Hyun, which made Shin Se Gi awfully upset and demanded it "invalid".

When Yo Na was forced to sleep with Ri Jin.. Cha Do Hyun returned in the middle of the night.
Ri Jin and Cha Do Hyun were having a serious talk and were then gazing at each other until Ri On interrupts. Ri On regrets forcing Yo Na who is still a man, to sleep with Ri Jin in the same room. To avoid being caught by Ri On, Cha Do Hyun tries to imitate Ahn Yo Na.

What was heart fluttering was when Ri Jin gave Shin Se Gi a kiss as a farewell gift.
Oh Ri Jin who had given all the personalities a farewell gift, did not know what to get for Shin Se Gi. Therefore, he who has most affection and wonderful memories shared with Oh Ri Jin compared to the other personalities, was given a kiss by Oh Ri Jin as a good bye.

*END OF SPOILERS*

OST of Kill Me Heal Me

One of the songs added to my list of best drama OSTs has got to be Auditory Hallucination by Jang Jae In. This song itself provided a lot of emotions and atmosphere for the drama, and left a huge impression (even my dad commented that it's a nice song). It was frequently used in the drama, and definitely played a huge role for the success of the show. This song aroused feelings of nostalgia, sadness and sometimes "anxiety", which I really enjoyed listening to. Even now, the song still rings in my ears.

Overall opinion of Kill Me Heal Me

I feel that this drama was worth watching, and Ji Sung who portrayed the many different personalities definitely made the show interesting and entertaining to watch. The humor in Kill Me Heal Me was fun and made one enjoy the drama a whole lot. In addition, the plot itself was okay, and had a really nice flow. Though there were some parts that seemed redundant and uncertain towards the end, this drama was made worth the time probably because of Ji Sung's impressive acting. It may not be the best, but this drama can enlighten many who might be facing difficulties.

I feel that the storyline gives hope to people who are having negative thoughts. The fact about Oh Ri Jin's mystery that unfolded itself in the drama, also shows a similar thought to "blessing in disguise" as she has many people who love her well. This drama also shows that when in darkness, there's always a light to guide you out. In addition, sharing of pains with someone else is better and more bearable rather than facing them alone.

Therefore I thought that this drama was meaningful to a certain extent, and a pretty positive one too. It may seem like a typical korean drama whereby there are fights for the company within a wealthy family, this drama doesn't focus as much on it.

Definitely an interesting drama with interesting concepts that quickly changes the different settings from sadness to humour and so on, you name it.

If you love Ji Sung, don't forget to watch Kill Me Heal Me!!!
