My experience with Braces | I could finally smile

I was one of those girls who lacked self-esteem and confidence...
Mine was due to my ugly teeth

But gone were those terrible days when I hated my crooked teeth after embracing braces

If you are one of those who are about to get braces (or planning to), you must be wondering how having braces feels like.

So today, let me share with you guys on my experience with braces.

It's been almost a year since I had mine taken off, and the day when I genuinely felt good looking at my own smile was nonetheless, that very day when I finally had my braces taken off.

I had a very crooked set of teeth with a protruding bunny-like front tooth, and on top of that; according to my dentist - an overcrowding amount of teeth for the small mouth I have.

I was always very envious of others who had really nice teeth and they could smile confidently whenever they want. I was in fact, pretty mindful of how I looked with my crooked teeth when I was still in primary and secondary school. Because of this exact reason, I hated smiling with my teeth in photos, and I really disliked it when others watched me eat or tried to feed me some food. (I ended up eating very slowly too, for fear that my teeth was obvious to others' eyes. Therefore, I can never eat fast now.) I even hated it and got upset whenever I was shown a candid photo of myself smiling.

Yes, I was that mindful, I did not want anyone to notice my teeth at all - if possible.

It was annoying when everyone asked when I was gonna get braces, it was even more irritating when you face difficulties chewing and biting down food like chicken wings. My crooked teeth gave me a lot of discomfort over the years, and I know - I've heard criticisms behind my back - how suckish it feels to have people comment on your "weakest point".

You'll probably understand all these struggles if you have crooked teeth too.
Some of these struggles are also found in one of my blog posts - click here to read.

Well well, all these struggles are finally over for me now!

I joined the waiting list at the Singapore's National Dental Centre (NDC) a few years ago and surprisingly, the wait was only approximately a year and a half short. I'd call it short - time flies by even before you know it.

I was expecting at least 2 to 3 years, but nope.

I got my braces treatment started in January 2012, when I was just starting out life as a Secondary 4 student.
Mine was the traditional metal braces.

Is putting on braces painful?

Dear girls and boys, braces are really not painful at all. It is normal for you to feel nervous on that day, but believe me,

it doesn't hurt.

(The only thing that hurt for me would be when the dentist cleaned my teeth and my weak gums ached... argh)

Okay, but this varies according to individuals. For mine, it definitely did not hurt when the braces was being put on.

What does the dentist/orthodontist do on the day you put on your braces?

If I remembered it correctly, it takes about 20 - 30 minutes (this depends too).
He or she will most likely give your teeth a good clean before putting on your braces.

It'll feel weird to have your braces at first, but don't worry, you'll get used to it.
You may feel a little tightness at times and that's fine too.
(I ate normally on that day, but some people might find it difficult to.)

Don't expect your teeth to become straight over a night - braces are not instant miracles!

BUT! It is a sure thing that you'd see your teeth move into good alignment every month.
(Sometimes they'll look so straight that you'd actually think it's fine to take off your braces already!)

The next few days will be when the pain comes in.
Because your teeth are tightened with the braces and "moving" over the next few days, it might sting alittle at times - you'll probably not be able to bite down on any hard food either. (And hence the reason why people usually eat porridge for a few days at the start)

Such pains will be felt at least once a month after you have your braces tightened, but they are not excruciatingly painful (it is rare for that sort of experience). On certain days, you might have to endure the irritating discomfort from the wires poking inside your mouth - go to your dentist if it is too unbearable though!

All of these however, can never beat that excitement after you've gotten your braces anyway;
The fun part - you get to play around with the colours every month!

The cons of braces?

Braces can be uncomfortable at times, and definitely troublesome. Why?

Don't be disheartened though.

The pros are way more than the cons, and are for a lifetime. These cons will go away once you remove your braces.
All you have to do is to get used to life with braces, and wait patiently for the day when your orthodontist will finally give the green light to have them removed!

I had my braces for around 2.5 years, and I would gladly say that I've never regretted having them. I miss how i looked with braces, but I love my teeth even more now!! I am finally able to smile and laugh confidently like never before! (Definitely happier now too!)

I CAN FINALLY BITE DOWN ON AN APPLE AND EAT CHICKEN WINGS WITH EASE TOO!!!

Does braces affect you in terms of appearance or speech?

Like I've said, your pronunciation may differ with clarity at times, and it is perfectly normal.
Some people don't have such encounters, so it depends.

Appearance-wise, I personally find that people with braces look uniquely attractive (I had this mindset even before I had braces). There's just some sort of special feeling I get everytime I see them smile!

All in all, braces are really quite beneficial and in my opinion, it really helps in boosting your self-esteem and confidence too.

Find out what are the reasons why you should get braces and why they are worth your money

Here are some photos of me from the past till present:

I know I look so much thinner the past few years and gained alot of weight now, but hey I'm human and I do grow up too :(

But... MY BODY SIZE IS NOT THE MAIN POINT HERE OKAY!!!!

These were when I was in secondary 3 - I started to tell myself to be less mindful and be confident. Hence I smiled with teeth sometimes. (It does not look as bad in photos at times)

This was when I just had my braces in sec 4
(doing you both justice here because we looked so awful here)

Approximately 2 months later in March 2012 (See the difference?! That's how fast your teeth might move)

2013 Chinese New Year - my teeth looked so much better by then!!!

September 2013

June to mid August 2014
(You can see that my teeth are perfectly straight by this period of time - approx. 2.5 years ever since I put on my braces)

And that means....

Taken on the day I took my braces off!!

Honestly I was a little sad because my gums did not look as nice as I expected them to be, and I felt like my teeth was still a little not up to "perfection". But after wearing the retainers and as months passed...

^
One of my biggest relief - no braces to hinder my pronunciation during my interview for internship!!!

^
I no longer hate candid shots anymore, because I think I look fine and really genuinely happy in the photos!

More recent photos...

I really think that my teeth looks so much better now as compared to when I first took off my braces!
The shape of my gums looks much "neater" too! (Probably thanks to the retainers)

I am so thankful for my dad who helped me get this beautiful set of teeth which I've always wanted.

But honestly, I feel that even if you have crooked teeth, don't ever give up on your confidence and self-esteem!

Don't even think negatively of yourself, you are beautiful alright.

As I grew older I came to realise that what others comment about you really shouldn't matter at all.

You are who you are, you are the one who shape yourself into who you want to be.

Being confident is the best way one can ever truly love themselves, and everyone looks beautiful when they are confident.

Remember, don't let anyone pull you down!!!
There will always be people who will love you for who you are and not what you look like.

Really, don't forget to put on a confident smile!
When you are confident, people will most likely shut up! (Lack of confidence makes you look weak!)

So are any of you actually one of those intending to get braces? Or are you guys currently wearing them?

What are your thoughts on braces?

Singapore SMRT train service breakdown | Appreciating the little things

Just like how us, human beings are not perfect, we can't expect anything else to be
But for every flaw there is, we can find a good in it

(I have no idea if this post would offend any readers, but please note that no criticism or harm was intended or directed to anyone, and respect that all contents are solely my personal opinions.)

We all know that none of us are perfect (in this world, nothing is). If we are, there would be no rooms for improvement, and we'll always expect everything to be handed to us on a silver platter. In life, we are always learning and making continuous efforts to become the better of best. Definitely, we'll never be satisfied with being just "best".

What's exactly the best? Don't ask me though, I am not sure too.

The SMRT trains in Singapore may not be the best to us, since I've seen people complaining often about how it gets disrupted easily. I'll admit, at times at certain moments, I probably complained about it too. It is understandable, running late and having the train disrupted is no good for us. What's worse when we started off our days early, and ended up being late because of a train fault?

We're all humans anyway - it is in our nature to complain, we all have feelings.

However, I often feel that we should also think about the good sides of something instead of complaining all the time.

Many of us tend to forget that the trains don't work on a miracle.
We have the engineers and workers out there, putting in hard work and extreme efforts just so that we, the commuters, can have a pleasant journey. Placing myself in their shoes, I don't think I will be able to handle such difficult work.
Even in other countries, there are bound to be train faults as well, not just Singapore.

In everything, there's always an effort being put in - like I said, things aren't handed to us on a silver platter.

Just yesterday, there was a train fault during the evening peak hours which was pretty serious (and possibly one of the worst breakdowns in Singapore). It affected both the North-South and East-West lines which caused many much inconvenience.

In order to help us get home safely, there were free shuttle bus services and bus rides the whole night as a compensation. I'll be truthful about how I was pretty upset last evening, since I was rushing off to meet a customer to hand over the handicraft she had ordered. The buses were really packed that I had to take a cab down to Woodlands from Yishun instead.

When I was returning home, all the bus queues at the interchange were crazily long - but I am thankful that I managed to board the bus after some time and got home safely. No doubt, the bus ride was one of the slowest I've experienced (I believe), but I truly appreciate how the driver tried to let as many passengers as possible to get on board because it was getting really late. (It was close to 10pm)

I scrolled through Twitter, and obviously, many were ranting about the train service (AS WELL AS FREE BUS RIDES).

I was upset about the train service before that, but that annoyance soon went away.
That annoyance came back when I saw that there were people complaining about the "useless" intention of free bus rides because they were all too packed to pick up other passengers at the bus stops.

I can't deny - I felt disappointed that there were people unappreciative of the little efforts being put in..
At least they tried.

But clearly, I have no rights to say much since I was complaining about the train disruption earlier on, right?

So I woke up this morning and reflected.

These were my thoughts after reflecting:

No matter how bad the train service disruption was, I honestly can't put the blame (or should I say we) on SMRT and complain further.

I know, this is not the first time. However, it is definitely not something that the train service staff , SMRT, LTA or whoever related expected or even wanted to happen. Such things are unavoidable after all. I believe that they all felt really guilty about what happened.

To think that they tried to compensate us with free bus rides, it clearly showed that they were putting in efforts to find a temporary solution as well. We should at least be grateful that we got home safely with the help of the bus drivers, or even taxis - some with their own personal cars.

Unlike us, the workers and engineers had to stay out all night, putting in extra hardwork and efforts to solve the problems just so that we can have a peaceful transport experience the next morning.

They were concerned about us, and how we would face much inconvenience while heading off to work or school.
At least they cared.

I read this news article awhile ago and I felt nothing but gratefulness.

Firstly, Mr Lui apologised although it really isn't anyone's fault.

I honestly feel that having a train breakdown is unpredictable. Sometimes, it just happens. Especially when train services are stopped in order to investigate the situation and cause of problem, if you look at it in a good way, it was done for our safety.
(after all we can't expect a train to operate when it's faulty because it is extremely dangerous)

It clearly showed that Mr Lui felt really sorry for what happened and is taking up responsibility.

Secondly, he was present since early morning to observe the situation and ensure that everything is okay.

I really appreciate such a gesture, at least he is making the effort. Honestly, it is not easy to solve such problems.
If not for his and the others' efforts, where would we have gotten transport in Singapore?

The complains going around probably made him even more guilty, but we can see that he is really concerned about us.
Let's just appreciate the efforts Mr Lui and the others are putting in.

He could have inquired about the incident further, but he was flexible in deciding what's more important in such a difficult situation.
Mr Lui surely wanted to be able to find the cause in order to solve the problem quickly, just so that train service can resume for the commuters.

There, he said it too. Of course, he is concerned about the commuters!

Look, he even apologised on his Facebook. And clearly, he instructed SMRT & LTA to work through the night so that train services can resume the next morning.

For who? For us of course!

Imagine having to stay out all night, sweating in such a humid Singapore even at night times.
Imagine them being tired and sleepy... (and hungry), and yet having to work through out the night.
They could choose not to do it overnight, but they were doing it for us.

So we should at least be thankful for being able to get home - even if it was late - to rest, have dinner and be comfortably sleeping after a hot shower.
After all, we really can't blame anyone all these for happening. Nobody wanted it to, and everyone tried their best to solve it. There was also no way better to transport everyone quickly and conveniently at the same time, we just have to be understanding.
I definitely know that there were engineers, technicians, train service staff running about helping out stranded commuters. I saw how they were all sweating and tired, but still greeted everyone with a smile whenever they were thrown with tons of questions. Definitely, not all areas of Singapore would have had enough manpower, and of course.. That requires our understanding as well.
I am truly & deeply grateful for what they did,

(All images and information above were taken from Straits Times online)
(You may read the full article here)

We all tend to look only at the negative side of everything.
Even if there were faults, we could at least try to look at the little things that we can be thankful for.

We would be happier, in a society full of love and warmth.

In life, instead of trying to find fault with everything, we should try to be grateful for the hardwork, effort and concern from others.

In every fault we find, there are also things to be thankful for.
We just have to learn to look at things in a positive perspective.

I also read an article regarding the kind acts from others amid the train disruption. My heart really melted when I read about it, and it shows how Singaporeans come together as one during difficult times.
(Click here to read the article)

Truthfully, I am proud of what they did and I hope that these kind acts would never stop.

Appreciating the little things in life makes one happier, and makes the world a better place.

6 Great reasons why you SHOULD get Braces and why braces are worth your money

BID GOODBYE TO UGLY & CROOKED TEETH WITH BRACES

Braces can be a part of beauty in our lives
You may think that braces makes one ugly, but it can never be worse than a set of crooked teeth

Having an ugly and crooked set of teeth can be very detrimental to the self-esteem and confidence of an individual. Not only does it possibly bring about criticisms from others, it also causes those with such a set of teeth to face many struggles - which apparently, people with perfect teeth can't understand.

I've previously blogged about the different struggles people like us with crooked teeth face often (click here to read more), and today I am going to tell you the exact reasons why you should get braces and why they are worth it.

Firstly & most importantly - the highly anticipated outcome of all braces-users - prettier & healthier teeth.
Of course, you can't expect your teeth to become straight over one night. However, you can definitely feel the excitement as you notice how the gaps between your teeth close over time, and surely, your teeth gets into good alignment slowly. (Though as contradicting as this may sound, your teeth actually moves pretty quickly after you put the braces on.)
You'll have better oral hygiene too - crooked teeth are harder to be kept clean!

The nasty criticisms and probing will finally cease.
One of the greatest struggle we all face with crooked teeth - but people will (usually & finally) keep their mouths shut after you get braces. Remember how your relatives or friends would always ask when you are putting on braces?
There, they finally got their answers!

You gain more confidence in yourself.
After getting braces, it is no doubt that you will start being less mindful of how you look with your teeth and smile with confidence. Or should I say, you'll probably feel proud of your braces and "show then off".
(No more envying & being jealous of people with braces or perfect teeth!)

Positivity, positivity and more positivity!
After being confident, you'll find yourself looking at things in a more positive manner than before!
You know that your teeth will be beautiful.
You know that no one will judge you further.
You know that it is perfectly alright to show your teeth now.
You know that you look fine with braces.
You know that people are gonna be envious of your teeth in the future.
You know that you can smile - a gorgeous smile.

Of course, what does positiveness and confidence lead to? Happiness for sure!
You'll realise how happy you are with your braces as compared to the past without it. In the past, all you felt were sadness and feelings of envy, which probably made you "depressed" about an unattainable nice set of teeth.
But that's okay. Braces will be there to cure all of these negativity and unhappiness!

Lastly, what could be more enjoyable than picking different colours for the bands of your braces every month?
It is important to have our braces tightened once a month (depending on your orthodontist) - and this is the time when you get to choose your colour of the month! (I loved my visits back then because I was always so excited to pick a different colour, and you can mix the colours too!)

Sure, these are not the only reasons why you should get braces - but are definitely few of the best reasons (in my opinion)

What about the other significant benefits after you finish your braces treatment?

1. You'll have no more troubles chewing or biting down food - especially hard food - since your teeth are well aligned after the braces treatment.

2. You'll feel more comfortable because you won't necessarily feel any teeth sticking out everywhere with your tongue.
(I hated how I'd feel almost all my teeth sticking out at different places in the past)

3. Your lips & jaw line will probably look better after that. This depends on the severity of your crooked teeth previously - I was told by my orthodontist that misalignment of teeth causes your lips and jaw to look unsymmetrical or "wrong", and it got better with braces!

4. You'll realise how you are able to speak with better clarity as compared to the days with crooked teeth. With the gaps between your teeth closed, it is easier to pronounce certain words.

5. More comfort when brushing your teeth! You can hardly feel any pain in your gums like those felt before braces. Crooked teeth somewhat causes the gums to be really weak and sore, hindering you from brushing very hard since the gums from the gaps will ache .

6. Surely, you'll hear people telling you that your teeth looks so good now and that you have a pretty smile!

With so many benefits physically and mentally, braces are definitely worth your money.
It is every owner-of-crooked-teeth's dream to have them!

Read my experience with braces here

How long does a braces treatment take?

Very often, braces treatment lasts for 2 to 3 years. However, it is possible to take them off after a year plus if your orthodontist gives the green light. On the other hand, it is possible to extend the treatment until you are satisfied with how your teeth looks.
(Most dentists will ask you if you are satisfied with your teeth when the time comes)

It is also possible to have your braces treatment last more than 3 years if your teeth were severely misaligned.
Nevertheless, patience is key.

On top of that.. Just like it takes two hands to clap in a relationship, you have a part in taking good care of your teeth as well. It is important that you brush your teeth properly and floss between your braces brackets often using a floss brush.

You'll also have to remember to put on retainers after your braces are removed. This prevents your teeth from shifting back to its original state. (Clearly, you wouldn't want that to happen.. So it is best that you listen to your orthodontist's advises)

Retainers are worn for a lifetime. Depending on the severity of your teeth previously, some may only need to wear them at night when they sleep; while some people, for the first 6 months (like myself), are required to wear them for a full day daily - except meal times and when they brush their teeth. It may feel like a burden at first, but you'll definitely get used to it.

What are the struggles you will face with braces?

Braces may have its own struggles and cause inconvenience to us, such as having food stucked in your braces most of the times and usually having ulcers (such a pain in the butt!)

But think again. Why not tolerate these minor struggles for 2 to 3 years and get a beautiful set of teeth for the rest of your life? Struggles can be adapted over time.. But what's more appealing than the result you'll see after you take off your braces?

You'll definitely not regret putting on braces..
You'll probably be glad, and you'll miss them once you have them taken off.

How much do braces cost?

Usually, the traditional metal braces are more popular and in a way, cheaper. If you are facing financial difficulties, you can get a referral letter from your school's dentist or wherever, and head down to Singapore's National Dental Centre. They offer government subsidies with the condition that you wait in the queue for your turn. (Usually at least a year and a half or if you are lucky then less than that)

The average fee is around 3.5k (varies accordingly), which can be paid by instalments. The package includes subsequent consultation fees, materials, as well as your retainers - but excludes any extraction or tooth surgery charges. There will most likely be a first consultation fee (very often less than $100) during your first visit, whereby your orthodontist examines your teeth and decide what treatment to be done for you. (I believe there might be some other materials cost too, but it depends)

Once your treatment starts, at times during subsequent visits, you'll have to pay a few dollars for certain braces materials that may be used by your orthodontist which are necessary for you.

I've heard that some private dental clinics also offer braces treatment at affordable rates similar to NDC, which are also payable via monthly instalment. You'll just have to conduct some research and source for them.

Therefore, if you are in need of braces or considering to get braces, go ahead and do so!!
There are even people out there who put on braces solely for fun and for a different look (rich people I assume....)

You won't regret it.
Trust me, I am so much more happier with my teeth now!
(Here is the post on my experience with braces)

So don't worry...
Brace yourself and Smile!

20 Reasons to be Thankful for our Grandparents

A photo taken at my grandparents house when I was a little kid

Very often I may not have the time to visit my grandparents,
but little did anyone know how much I think about and miss them - more than anyone else can assume.

Seeing little kids with their grandparents these days made me feel nostalgia for my childhood days. However, the young children of the current generation although seemingly well-mannered, can still be rather rude towards their grandparents. I've noticed how disrespectful they can get, and no doubt that I felt really sorry and sad for their grandparents.

I understand that we all have our bad days once in a while - we are all humans. There are also times when we'd actually get annoyed with our grandparents when they show "too much" concern and bombard us with questions. I've went through that phase when I was in my early teens a few years ago, and you can't imagine how remorseful (and ashamed) I am whenever I look back at those days.

Our grandparents deserve nothing but great respect and love from us. We should always be thankful for them and appreciate the things they do for us - be it in the past, present or future.
We should never take them for granted.

I've been thinking a lot about my grandparents lately especially after my recent trip back to their house. I looked back at the things they did and still do for me, and there's no other things I can say except that I am truly grateful for them.

Here's a list of 20 good reasons why we should be thankful for our grandparents
I don't know about anyone else, but most of these are the biggest things I can ever thank them for.

1. Firstly, their existence.
Without them, your parents won't even be here - including you.

2. At some point of time, they babysat us.
Remember those days when our parents were busy and hard at work to earn money for a living? Our grandparents were very often the ones who babysat us when they were not around. Who else would babysit us without any hesitation and genuinely take care of us? We all know how hard it is to take care of a child - changing of diapers, feeding, keeping a lookout 24/7.
There's no other people more willing than our grandparents. (especially at their age, it's a very tiring job...)

3. They still treat you like a baby even when you're older.
In our grandparents eyes, we will always be that same little boy or girl no matter how old we are.

4. Apart from our parents, they love us the most.
Just like our parents, the love we receive from our grandparents will forever be unconditional.

5. They are always thinking about you.
Even if they don't show it, just know that they are the ones who will never stop thinking for us.

6. They care about you a whole lot.
More than you thnk actually. They worry for your safety, your health, your well-being. The first thing they'd always ask you everytime will probably be "Have you eaten?", and if you've not.. they'll most likely come out of the kitchen with a mountain of food within seconds.

7. With that, they love stuffing you with food - especially declicious ones.
Our grandparents are always worried that we starve ourselves or whether we have enough to eat and stay away from hunger..
They will always go the extra miles just to make sure we have our tummies filled (happily).

8. They try to give you the best of everything.
One (good) common example would be the times at the dinner table:
They are always placing tons of dishes on your plate to make sure you eat, to make sure the food are reachable to you..
If there are dishes like chicken or duck, they'd always find the best meat - with no bones - for you.  (Or should I say, the best part)
Observe and you'll see how they'd always eat the parts with more bones just so that you'll get all the juicy meat. (How selfless!!!)

 9. When you visit them, they will never fail to ensure extreme comfort for you at their house.
They will always treat you as though you are their VIPs.

10. They try not to trouble you.
Our grandparents are too selfless that they tend to keep things to themselves. Even if they need help with any house chores, they will never seek for yours. So remember to take the initiative and ask, or don't even bother asking - just do it. (They will be very happy!!!)

11. You'll just feel pampered around them.
Not all parents pamper their children, but I know most grandparents does.
If their actions aren't considered pampering, I don't know what is.

12.  They are the ones who will hardly (or never) scold you.
Because they just can't bear to, unless you made a very serious mistake.
(Of course our parents too, love us like our grandparents do, but scoldings are always for our own good).

13. They will usually speak up for you.
We all know how our grandparents would sometimes side us when we make small mistakes and get scolded or even punished by our parents...

14. They worry about your pocket money.
You'll remember the days when you're still a little kid, they'd give you some pocket money just so that you could buy an ice-cream. When you're older, they worry about whether you have enough money to spend. They'd never hesitate to offer help if you ever face financial problems.

15. They put up with the annoying things you do - because they enjoy your silliness.
I am sure that we were all once that annoying little kid back then who can get a little mischievous at times..

16. They genuinely appreciate your presence and love your companion.
They will always greet us with a warm smile when we meet and are genuinely happy to see us.

17. Our grandparents are like our mentors
They will give you good advices and a place to seek comfort if you ever need them. (We even learn new things too!)

18. They put in the effort to get close to you.
Our grandparents will always make the efforts to talk to us and keep the relationship close.

19. They are always there for you.
If you ever feel alone with nowhere to go... You know where or whom you can turn to!

20. You will always be their precious grandchildren.
Even if you treat them with no respect, no matter what, they will love and care for you the same until the end of time.

The list of reasons of course, does not stop here at just 20
But these are definitely few of the reasons why we should be very grateful for our grandparents.
Despite their old age, they are willing to do anything just to make sure that we are happy.

So if you've not been giving them the respect they deserve..
It's still not too late to change your attitude and show them that you love them!

I may not be someone who is very affectionate towards my grandparents in terms of physical actions, but I do show them that I love them in other ways!

If you are a person who is shy like myself, try doing other things that can express how you feel.
Love can't be seen, but they can definitely be felt.

My grandparents are very amazing people who are forever kind and selfless towards me..
I really thank them for being alive.

I earnestly hope for them to stay healthy & happy even many years later down the road.

It is unavoidable that there will come a day when our grandparents will leave us...

But they will always be the ones who will stay in our hearts forever.
